Just Be Cool

Trying to beat this crazy summer heat?

If you’re in New York City like us, then you know the past few days have been intense. Even with the thunderstorm the other day (which I don’t think anyone planned for), the heat just will not give us a break! But no matter where we are, we need some easy steps to take care of ourselves to survive through the end of the summer.

First and foremost

I know, you hear it all the time – “Stay hydrated!” But it’s so necessary! Drink plenty of water throughout the day and you can even add a pinch of sea salt to your water bottle (Don’t worry, it won’t taste like the ocean!) The sea salt is just an easy way to help replenish your electrolytes that you’re losing when you sweat.

Second

Our favorite summer fruit is watermelon! In Chinese Medicine, watermelon (or Xi Gua) is your best and tastiest option to beat dehydration. After all – it is 92% water! Be sure to opt for watermelons with seeds because in Chinese Medicine, we use seeds to generate body fluids!
Other items to add to your grocery list are cantaloupe, oranges, cucumber, sprouts, asparagus, spinach, and mint! (Among many more!)

Third

We know it’s probably the easiest choice to order a nice cold brew or iced tea to cool down your morning. But iced beverages actually make the digestive system work harder and cause the stomach to generate even more heat to break your food down. So try more room-temperature beverages and you can add cooling elements, like mint and chrysanthemum to cool your body down!
Just brew a tea of a handful of dried mint and dried chrysanthemum flowers and refrigerate to bring the temperature down. You can enjoy this cooled (not iced) or at room temperature with a bit of honey!

Essential Oils NYC

And last but certainly not least

Essential oils! Use a refreshing blend of peppermint, eucalyptus, rosemary and lavender. When used together, these oils are your true friends to combatting heat, while grounding you to bring your body to a more comfortable and cooling state. Just apply to the back of your neck and wrists to experience the bliss, when you’re feeling overwhelmed by the heat.
*Extra tip – this can also be great for hot flashes as well!*

Never forget that acupuncture and herbal medicine are wonderful options for your health concerns. With our medicine, we can help clear heat and replenish fluids in your body that may manifest in more ways than one. This can be seen in multiple symptoms such as abnormal sweating, skin issues, increased appetite, anxiety or panic attacks, and more. Always feel free to reach out and schedule your first appointment to let us help bring your body back to a more balanced state!

Love,
Sanctuary
